And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
(Matthew 10:30-31 NIV)
TRUTH: God knows just how much hair is on your head.
TRUTH: You are worth more than many sparrows to Him.
For some, these truths are sufficient to help us understand our true worth. But for others, perhaps we need a bit more than these truths to get a better picture of our true worth. We might need more evidence than knowing how much hair is on our head and that we are worth more than sparrows. Why? Because there are a lot of other voices out there contradicting the truth of our worth. Thankfully God has provided us with the voice of His word that repeatedly speaks about how He loves and values us more than all of His other creations.
God’s word says…
Here is one of those places in His word that declares the immense worth we have in the eyes of God:
When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
(Psalm 8:3-9 NIV)
When we look at all of the amazing creations of God, how can mankind top all of that in God’s eyes? How can He continue to love us and value us, as we the human race continue to fall further and further away from revering and acknowledging Him in every aspect of our lives? The Message commentary of Psalm 8:4 straightforwardly asks God: Why do you bother with us? Why take a second look our way?
Despite our sin…
Now, if we were living as Adam and Eve were living in the Garden of Eden before sin, I can see how God would be enamored with the ones He described as very good (Genesis 1:31). But when Psalm 8 was written (along with every other example of how God values us), sin’s presence and its devastating consequences had long been established. And yet God still chose to express how much he values us! Not just a little but more than the very things that many choose to worship over God. I marvel at the moon and stars at night, the magnificent mountains of the Colorado skyline and the beautiful parrot fish that swim in the gorgeous turquoise waters of Bermuda, my island home. I cannot fathom how God can value us sinful beings over such awesome creations!
Perhaps you are still struggling to see your true worth and how much God loves you. If so, consider this:
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
(Romans 5:8 NLT)
Despite our shortcomings, our failures and our inability to live up to His standards, God still desires a relationship with us! Christ came and died for this very reason. God values us so deeply that He allowed His perfect Son to die for us despite our sinful state.
Truth worth sharing…
So never think of yourself as worthless, unwanted, lacking value. The One who created the majestic heavens, all wildlife and everything else in His splendorous nature, considers us to be His most valuable prized creation of all! He left those majestic heavens to let us know this truth and to restore our relationship with Him.
If you are already aware of your true worth and value, I encourage you to share this with someone who isn’t. There are many in our family, our neighborhoods, our workplaces who are downtrodden and bombarded daily with the message that they are worthless. Be Christ’s light, fragrance and ambassador with this message: You are one of God’s greatest creations and He loves and values you so much that He sent His Son Jesus to not only tell you but to show you with His life. This is truth worth sharing!
